Launch of the Hugo Observatory
Nicolas Hulot conference on the occasion of the launch of the HUGO Observatory of ULiège, dedicated to environmental migration. "The climate crisis: the keystone of human dignity and justice".
As a public university open to the world and is anchored in the scientific, cultural and economic development of its region, the University of Liège relies on its three pillars: teaching, research and civic engagement.
ULiège trains responsible citizens who are provided with cutting-edge knowledge and critical thinking, are able to share knowledge and can push forward an increasingly complex world.
ULiège develops and promotes excellence in research, multidisciplinary and direct engagement with its instruction.
Global exposure is a top priority at the University of Liège. The institution offers a wide range of international mobility opportunities to students, researchers and staff, enabling them to enhance their cross-disciplinary skills and language knowledge.
ULiège: an experience of daily living. Located in 3 cities and 4 campuses, the university is a key player in terms of the environment and mobility.
Study the causes of climate change and its impacts on the environment as well as on society. Find leads and consider solutions.
FOCUS (Freshwater and OCeanic science Unit of reSearch) is a research unit which integrates fundamental and applied research in the aquatic domain. Its general theme is to carry out studies on the characterisation, understanding and modelling of the physical environment of aquatic ecosystems to maintain and/or restore their good environmental status and promote the goods and services provided by these ecosystems to businesses. In particular, the goal is to understand the dynamics of the ocean and inland waters and the interactions between organisms and their habitat.
The interdisciplinary research unit SPHERES, which covers both the exact, applied, social and economic sciences, seeks to research the different spheres that make up the Earth: the atmosphere (climate, composition, traffic, ambient air), the hydrosphere (rivers, the polar cap, aquifer), the biosphere (biocenosis, ecosystem, agriculture, biodiversity), the geosphere (geomorphology, geo-risk, surface processes), the technosphere (geomatics, satellite positioning, remote sensing, smart cities, energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable construction) and the anthroposphere (habitat, territory, economic geography, governance and citizen participation). The SPHERES unit has a threefold mission: to study their operation and interaction on the fundamental and applied levels, to consider the dynamic relationship between humankind and its environment and to contribute to the sustainable and intelligent development of Society.
The Environmental Expertise Unit was created in 1992 within the Fondation Universitaire Luxembourgeoise ASBL in order to coordinate the activities of service delivery and carry out Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA). It continues its activity within the Department of Sciences and Environmental Management of ULiège on the Arlon campus. Accumulated experience and the available equipment allow for the realisation of many environmental studies
The University of Liège has - on its Gembloux campus - an Ecotron, a tool to study agro-ecosystems, including plants (crops and weeds), animals (insects and other invertebrates) and micro-organisms. It is a design that realistically simulates real and future environmental conditions, including weather and soil conditions. Daily and seasonal variations can be reproduced, and variability controlled. Studies focus on plant growth dynamics, interacting with environmental growth factors and under biotic and abiotic constraints.
The objective of this research centre is to use the links between climate change and ecosystems in order to develop production and transformation alternatives for agro-resources by integrating new technical, economic, social and environmental constraints. The objective is to enable populations to have financially accessible and quality local food resources, to preserve biodiversity, to conserve water resources, to avoid the spread of toxins in the environment, to reduce the energy dependency of farms and to re-shape consistent landscapes.
The Hugo Observatory is formed of an informal group of researchers from the University of Liège wishing to deal with the questions of environmental migration. Quickly, the team earned international visibility and proudly claimed a spot at the forefront of the evolution of the research on these issues. The team is now widely recognised for its excellence on the ground, and continues to attract new researchers and students each year. It has developed an empirical expertise in a number of regions of the world, especially in West Africa, Southeast Asia and in the South Pacific, supported in this field by a number of local partner institutions.
The ICOS project (European infrastructure project) has as objectives, among others, to establish an integrated infrastructure of longer-term observation of CO2 and greenhouse gases on a global scale, and to determine the flow of these gases from observations and to link them to emissions processes. In Wallonia, the ICOS project includes three ground-based observatories in which will be carried out continuous measurements of these gases between ecosystems and the atmosphere, including one on the Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech campus. The measurements taken will allow for a monitoring of the dynamics of these flows on a daily, seasonal and interannual scale. In addition to CO2, other gases (water vapour, methane, ozone, nitrous oxide, volatile organic compounds, isotopic compounds) can be studied.
The PHYTOsystems platform brings together different plant biology laboratories which have developed complementary skills in the development of whole plant or microalgae farming systems. These skills are recognised and mean that the laboratories concerned are regularly contacted for scientific collaborations or external services using their farming systems.
The University of Liège's Submarine and Oceanographic Research Station is located in the Mediterranean Sea. It is situated at the tip of Revellata, in Calvi, Corsica.
For more than 45 years, STARESO develops and welcomes numerous thematic marine and terrestrial research through national, international, and multi-disciplinary projects.
Among them, studies in biodiversity, structure and functioning of benthic and pelagic ecosystems on various scales of space and time, the study of temporal evolution of primary producers (planktons, algae, seagrass...) for the last half a century in relation to climate variations, the characterisation and prediction of responses by the marine system to climate variations and anthropic disturbances with a view to better managing the coastal environment, the carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycle, and the continuum between continental and oceanic waters.
