A new training program for scientific staff has been available since the start of the 2025–2026 academic year. In an ever-evolving research environment, it offers high-quality training tailored to the specific needs of researchers of all backgrounds.

This newtraining program was developed in collaboration with researchers and the relevant departmentstoaddress the specific needs of the many different scientific career paths. It thus complements the existing offerings by providing a coherent training pathway, similar to what is already available for faculty and ATO staff.

The training program consists of two components:

  • Acomponent commonto all research staff, which must include a half-day orientation at ULiège (onboarding), a day of training on ethics and scientific integrity, and training on the principles of sustainability and transition (“Research in Transition”: 1 hour online, 4 hours in person).
  • Aspecific componentbased on one of the six identified researcher profiles: doctoral student, research assistant, doctoral research assistant, postdoctoral fellow, tenured research scientist, and tenured teaching scientist. This component includes both mandatory training and recommended training based on individual needs.

In accordance with the Board of Directors’ decision, this training program is mandatory for research staff who begin their positionsstarting with the 2025–2026 academic year. Current staff may participate on a voluntary basis.

In practice, those concerned will be directly informed of the training sessions, which will be held in French and English. The half-day orientation session will be mandatory for all new researchers, regardless of the duration of their appointment or contract; the other stages of the training program, however, will be mandatory only for researchers whose appointment or contract extends for at least one year. With regard to doctoral students, the doctoral colleges retain the authority to decide on any necessary adjustments for students with specific profiles (joint supervision, clinical work, etc.). In addition, exemptions may be granted to individuals who have previously completed equivalent training.

Encouraging continuing professional development for researchers is one of the actions of HRS4R - HR Excellence in Research , the implementation of which is a priority project of the University of Liège's Plan Stratégique Institutionnel 2022-2026.
