he University of Liège subscribes to the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and has been awarded the HRS4R 'Human Resources for Reseachers'" label by the European Commission in recognition of its long-term commitment to the continuous improvement of working conditions and career development for its researchers.
As part of this commitment, ULiège has joined the Euraxess network, a unique tool for scientists wishing to advance their careers and personal development by moving to other countries.
Services for international researchers:
Belonging to a network of 500 international Euraxess centers located in 40 countries and to the Belgian network of Euraxess Centers,the ULiège Euraxess center offers you support and a full range of services to facilitate the integration and adaptation of international researchers. All services are free of charge. They include :
- Administrative and legal assistance: Specific information relating to visas, work permits and any other administrative aspects linked to mobility is provided to facilitate the process of settling in and starting research.
- Housing and integration: Support in finding accommodation for foreign researchers is offered, as well as help in integrating into the social and cultural life of the Liège region.
- Funding opportunities: Researchers are informed and advised on the various funding opportunities available to support their research projects within the university.
- Career guidance: Career guidance services are available to help researchers develop their potential and progress in their field of expertise.

Formalities to be completed
Contact the promoter of your research at the Université de Liège, to establish with him or her the program of research you will be carrying out and any courses you will be taking in Liège.
- If you hold a ULiège grant or contract, complete the Human Resources Administration data sheet with him/her.
- If you are not being paid by ULiège, please complete with your promoter the fiche d'intention to be returned to the Euraxess Centre.
Please note that you do not need to contact the embassy to submit your application. The University is responsible for applying for your long-stay visa with a single permit. You only need to go there to collect your visa once the single permit has been issued.
Here is the detailed procedure and the documents you need to provide to the University:
To apply for a single permit, you will need the following documents:
- Payment of the visa fee and proof of payment (amount of 138€ and information on how to pay)
- Criminal record less than 6 months old
- Medical certificate less than 6 months old
- Proof of health insurance
- Proof that your scholarship or salary is greater than or equal to 1994.18€ (amount indexed in 11/2023)
- Copy of valid passport
- Copy of diploma
- Proof of secondment certifying that your home institution will continue to pay social security contributions (if you receive a salary from your home institution).
Leaving your country
Check that your papers are in order before leaving the country and arriving in Belgium. There are a number of other formalities you'll need to complete to make your arrival and integration easier.

- a copy of your most recent diploma (translated into French or English if necessary)
- take out supplementary "all-risk" health and repatriation insurance either in your own country or in Belgium. If, after your arrival, you have an employment contract with ULiège, you will benefit from partial reimbursement of healthcare costs, under the same conditions as a Belgian employee.

- If members of your family are coming with you, don't forget to apply for a visa for them, and to inform the ULiège EURAXESS Center
- bring the following documents with you
- Valid passport or national identity card
- Official invitation from the University of Liège
- Attestation of admission to doctoral studies, if justified
- Diplomas certifying successful completion of your studies
- European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) OR form S1 or any other health insurance in your country
- Certificate of nationality (for researchers from outside the European Union)
- Driving license
- Photo ID
Arriving at ULiège
If you do not hold a ULiège grant or contract and have other funding, you can register with the University as a visiting researcher (see next section on visiting researchers IN).
If your stay exceeds three months, you must also :
- register as a resident with the local authorities in your place of residence,
- register with a mutual insurance company,
- possibly open a bank account
Before returning home
The Université de Liège is always keen to receive feedback on your experience. It can award you a Europass Mobilité or a document attesting to your work.

Filling in the form
Depending on your situation, you will be required to sign an agreement between ULiège and yourself to govern your stay. The Legal Affairs Department is responsible for drawing up this agreement.
Are you a researcher at ULiège who would like to spend some time abroad?

Please note that as of March 1, 2023, the scientific visa procedure has been replaced by the single permit procedure. This means that the visa application will now go through the Walloon Region and the Foreigners' Office. Please contact me early enough to anticipate potential delays.
Short-stay visa applications are also affected by this reform, and require a work permit.
