Launched in late 2023, the Open Source Academy aligns with the ULiège Open Science Roadmap, fostering a vibrant community dedicated to the Open Source ecosystem at ULiège and CHU.

Our projects

LUGULG (Linux User Group ULg)

LUGULG focuses on repurposing old PCs by installing Linux. Currently, the group is working to ensure Linux compatibility with ULiège's research environment, covering office tools and teaching applications. They are also developing a user-friendly manual for researchers interested in making the switch to Linux.

Open Source financing

Ensuring the sustainability of open source projects is a major challenge. While research grants can play a role, the development and maintenance of an open source project goes beyond the academic framework. This group therefore explores the various avenues of funding outside research: foundations, public subsidies outside research, internal ULiège funding, or even business models to support the ecosystem around open source initiatives.

ULiège & CHU Software showcase

ULiège and CHU researchers develop numerous software tools, but discovering them can be difficult. This initiative aims to create a showcase website for ULiège software, both open source and commercial, searchable by license, programming language, OS... Each entry will includes basic information and project links. All software undergo a thorough evaluation to ensure compliance with legal aspects, including ownership and open source licenses.

Open Source in researchers’ career

Currently, software and code contributions are not adequately reflected in a researcher’s bibliometrics, despite their significant value to the scientific community. This group explores ways to recognize and integrate open source contributions into researchers' career evaluations.

CollabULG (Collaborative tools ULg)

There are many free and open-source tools available that can be used instead of popular commercial ones. For example, you can use Framadate instead of Doodle to schedule meetings, Mattermost instead of Slack for team chats, Jitsi Meet for video calls, Yakforms to create online surveys or forms, and Overleaf to work together on LaTeX documents.

This  group focuses on sharing experiences and tips about how to set up and take care of these kinds of tools in real-life situations.

Join Us

In addition to these project groups, we hold quarterly meetings to review project progress and propose new initiatives. To join the community or get involved in one of the projects, please contact Jérémie Fays.
