The management of cancer patients is a growing challenge for our society. Despite major advances in prevention and treatment, new cases and diseases continue to increase due to population changes. In addition, the rapid progress in this field is creating new areas of specialization. The patient can therefore only receive the best possible care if the centers cooperate or share their knowledge and expertise.

Objective and purpose of the project

The objective of the OncoCare project is toimprove the quality of oncology care in the whole Euregio Meuse-Rhine. Cross-border cooperation will thus facilitate access to innovative therapeutic approaches and personalized cancer medicine. These objectives will be achieved through the implementation of various measures, structured in 3 actions :

  • Patient-centered medicine : In order to encourage the sharing of medical knowledge between hospitals, a tele-expertise network will be developed (possibility to seek the advice of a colleague and ensure faster patient care). The second activity will be to implement an application that collects patients' perceptions of the quality of their care in order to evaluate the impact of therapeutic decisions on the latter. The third action will be to set up a home hospitalization network to provide oncology care to patients in a familiar environment, thus freeing up hospital beds.
  • Quality of care : We aim to improve quality of care management by obtaining various accreditations (e.g. European JACIE accreditation), harmonizing cancer registries and developing software to manage hematopoietic stem cell transplants.
  • Access to innovative treatments : One of the objectives is the establishment of personalized and innovative cancer medicine in the Euregio. This will be achieved through the development of an international diagnostic and treatment guidelines tool to standardize care pathways between different centers and improve medical practices. A clinical trials registry will also be created, informing patients and health professionals about the studies conducted in the Euregio in oncology.
