The “Service d'Étude en Géographie Économique Fondamentale et Appliquée” (Segefa, ULiège) has carried out a study of the impact of Liège airport on regional employment
At the request of Awex, Segefa (ULiège) has studied the impact of Liège Airport on employment in the region. Result: in 2018, activities in and around the airport employed 8,715 people, or 7,365 FTEs. Among these jobs, there were 4,099 direct jobs, of which 97% were on permanent contracts and 93% full-time (excluding Fedex-TNT). 80% of these workers reside in the province of Liège.
If the study covers 2018, the trend continues in 2019: according to the available data, more than 9,000 workers owe their jobs to Liège Airport.
The Walloon Export and Foreign Investment Agency (Awex) has commissioned Segefa to carry out a study on the employment of economic activities in and around Liège Airport. The study sheds light on the airport's role as an economic "catalyst" that boosts commercial exchanges. The monitoring of airport activities thus constituted can be regularly updated by Awex.
For the year 2018, the period covered by this study, 118 companies operating at Liège Airport have been identified, employing 4,099 direct jobs (3,885 private jobs and 214 public jobs, including the airport). These 4,099 jobs correspond to 3,420 full-time equivalents (FTEs), to which must be added 250 temporary FTEs. These are jobs directly linked to the airport infrastructure and which allow it to operate, within an operational perimeter that respects the logic of the logistics chain of an airport specialising in cargo. Note: 97% of these workers have a permanent contract... And 93% of them work full-time (excluding Fedex-TNT). 80% of these workers reside in the province of Liège.
As for the companies employing these workers, they generate an estimated gross added value of more than 267 million euros in 2018 according to BelFirst, and 68% of their shareholders are foreign. It should be noted that while large employers systematically have foreign shareholders, SMEs are more inclined to retain a majority of their Belgian shareholders.
Alongside direct employment, indirect employment obviously has its importance: the study lists, still for the year 2018, 2,500 jobs for 2,200 FTEs. The induced jobs - i.e. jobs generated by the circular flow of income and consumption of workers - are estimated at 1,700 jobs for 1,400 FTEs. Finally, 115 jobs per 95 FTE are in catalytic employment.
Liège Airport thus supports more than 8,700 jobs.

It should be noted that while the study, to be scientifically accurate, focuses on the year 2018, the positive trend continues in 2019 with 373 additional jobs / 328 FTEs in the companies for which the data is directly available. This means that more than 9,000 workers owe their jobs to Liège Airport.
