MEDIT-AGEING

Investigating the impact of meditation training on mental health and welbeing in the ageing population

We will explore the effects of meditation practice with behavioural, psychoaffective, biological and neuroimaging measurements in older people unfamiliar with meditation practice that will be submitted to a 18-months meditation training (vs a control intervention or no intervention), and in people over 65-years that are expert in meditation. We will also measure in expert meditators brain activity associated to very specific meditation practice (mindfulness vs compassion) to obtain the "neural signature" of these two kind of meditation practice. These neural signatures will allow a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the effects observed after a 18-month training in novice older meditators.

Distributed, integrated and harmonised forest information for bioeconomy outlooks

DIABOLO project aims to:
i.    Strengthen the methodological framework for more accurate, harmonised and timely information from forest inventories and monitoring systems, to feed into EU information systems

EURAXESS TOP III

Making European research careers more attractive by developing new services and enhancing the current services of the EURAXESS network

The EURAXESS TOP III consortium includes partners from almost all EURAXESS countries (either as beneficiaries or associated partners, from altogether 39 countries), in order to ensure the widest possible coverage as well as increased impact. The project has been divided into eight work packages. Two WPs are devoted to the development, testing and pilot introduction of new services on careerdevelopment within the EURAXESS network. Extending the Ocean Data Interoperability Platform

The Ocean Data Interoperability Platform project is promoting the development of a common global framework for marine data management by developing interoperability between existing regional e-infrastructures. Through a series of international workshops attracting relevant domain experts a number of prototype interoperability solutions will be developed which will be implemented by the regional data infrastructures to provide users with open access to good quality multidisciplinary data and associated services. Improved access to a range of marine data will facilitate re-use of the data and support researchers in addressing grand challenges such as climate change and conservation of marine resources.

Integrated Activities for the High Energy Astrophysics Domain

The overall objective of AHEAD is to integrate national efforts in high-energy Astrophysics and to promote the domain at the European level, to keep its community at the cutting edge of science and technology and ensure that space observatories for high-energy astrophysics are at the state of the art. AHEAD will integrate key research infrastructures for on-ground test and calibration of space-based sensors and electronics and promote their coordinated use. In parallel, the best facilities for data analysis of high-energy astrophysical observatories will be made available to the European community. The technological development will focus on the improvement of selected critical technologies, background modeling and cross calibration for the benefit of future high energy missions like Athena, and the best exploitation of existing observatories.

MAMI: Measurement and Architecture for a Middlebox Internet

Recent revelations about large-scale pervasive surveillance of Internet traffic have led to a rapidly expanding deployment of encryption in order to protect end-user privacy. At the same time, network operators and access providers rely on increasing use of in-network functionality provided by middleboxes and network function virtualization (NFV) approaches to improve network operations and management, and to provide additional value for their customers. In addition, new applications such as interactive video make new demands on the transport layer, requiring the deployment of new protocols and extensions, the deployment of which is impaired by the proliferation of middleboxes that cause them to fail. These three trends are on a collision course.
The MAMI project seeks to restore balance among end-user privacy concerns in the face of pervasive surveillance, innovation in network protocols in the face of increasing ossification, and the provision of in-network functionality in a cooperative way.

Superfluidity: a super-fluid, cloud-native, converged edge system

Superfluidity is "a state in which matter behaves like a fluid with zero viscosity". Our project aims at achieving superfluidity inthe network: the ability to instantiate services on-the-fly, run them anywhere in the network (core, aggregation, edge) and shift them transparently to different locations.
The SUPERFLUIDITY project tackles crucial shortcomings in today's networks: long provisioning times, with wasteful overprovisioning used to meet variable demand; reliance on rigid and cost-ineffective hardware devices; daunting complexity emerging from three forms of heterogeneity: heterogeneous traffic and sources; heterogeneous services and needs; and heterogeneous access technologies, with multi-vendor network components.

BIOlogical therapy CYCLEs towards tailored, needsdriven, safer and cost-effective management of Crohn's disease

Most effective treatment of moderate-to-severe Crohn's disease is a combination therapy of immunomodulator and anti-TNF. However this combination therapy is associated with risks, particularly infections, and to high cost. Withdrawing one or the other treatment in remission periods has been tested in several pilot open-label studies. Annual relapse rate is close to 50%. The decision to stop one of these treatments is thus a difficulty one and is multidimensional. The aim of our work is to generate through a controlled clinical trial, robust data to confirm the relapse frequencies in different clinical situations, to assess priorities and preferences of patients and doctors, to study pharmaco-economic aspects et to look for biomarkers allowing to stratify patients and to select best candidated for treatment de-escalation.

Most maritime products are typically associated with large investments and are seldom built in large series. Where other modes of transport benefit from the economy of series production, this is not the case for maritime products which are typically designed to refined customer requirements increasingly determined by the need for high efficiency, flexibility and low environmental impactat a competitive price. Product design is thus subject to global trade-offs among traditional constraints (customer needs, technical requirements, cost) and new requirements (life-cycle, environmental impact, rules).
One of the most important design objectives is to minimise total cost over the economic life cycle of the product, taking into account maintenance, refitting, renewal, manning, recycling, environmental footprint, etc. The trade-off among all these requirements must be assessed and evaluated in the firststeps of the design process on the basis of customer / owner specifications.

The Fablab for geodata-driven innovation - by leveraging Space data in particular, in 2.0 Universities

FabSpace 2.0 aims at making universities open innovation centres for their region and improving their contribution to the performance of societies. It will concentrate on one innovation area with high expected socio-economic and environmental impact: geodata-driven innovation, by leveraging space data in particular.
When Universities must endorse a new role as co-creators of innovations in the context of Science 2.0 principles, the future realisation of open data as a new innovation scene needs to set up a creative environment in which developers from the civil society or industry or the academic research, public administrations and civil organisations can meet, work together, co-create new tools and business models.
The proposal consists in a new kind of fab labs: FabSpaces. A fab lab is a one-stop shop access to any materials, machines and tools to digitally manufacture new products, a FabSpace will be a one-stop shop-access to a range of data (incl. space data), free software & data processing tools.

Studying, Measuring and Altering Consciousness through information theory in the electrical brain

What is consciousness? Can it be measured? While humankind has struggled with these questions for millennia, our project will focuson more modest but nonetheless ambitious and related goals. Inspired by recent developments in neuroscience and the potential role of fundamental concepts such as information integration and algorithmic complexity, we will study, model, quantify, and alter observable aspects of consciousness. Our vision is that consciousness will someday be electromagnetically measured and altered, and that the associated needed insights will prove crucial to the development cognitive sciences.
The conceptual framework of the project rests on information theoretic developments that link consciousness to the amount of information that a physical system can represent and generate as an integrated whole, and from the related idea that consciousness can be quantified by metrics reflecting information processing and representation complexity.

Environmental Diplomacy and Geopolitics

This proposal seeks to increase and reinforce the cooperation that has been initiated between the University of Economics in Bratislava, Sciences Po and the University of Liège in the field of Environmental Diplomacy and Geopolitics. This field of international relations is gaining increasing importance, as environmental issues have become an increasingly important matter in international politics. The three partner universities have all developed a specific field of expertise in relation to the topic of the proposal: The Faculty of International Relations of the University of Economics in Bratislava (EUBA) has developed a wide expertise in the politics of environmental resources, including its security dimension; Sciences Po has recently launched a new research programme entitled Politics of the Earth, which looks at the new geopolitical challenges brought upon by the Anthropocene.

Marine Mammals

Using marine mammals for making science education and science careers attractive for young people

The Marine Mammals proposes to create a European consortium of education and research institutions, alongside small to medium enterprises, to promote STEM subjects and students' interest in science careers. All project partners are internationally renowned experts in their field of work. Together with teachers and educational scientists they will form expert groups who will develop teacher trainings and summer schools for secondary school students based on state of the art research on marine mammals. The project will drawon the vast variety of existing materials from all partners and use current methods and results from educational research to selectand adapt it accordingly. Combining the resource materials delivered by the different expert groups coherent cross-national entities for teacher trainings and summer schools will be produced and translated into all languages of the participating countries plus English.

Understanding the human brain is one of the greatest scientific challenges of our time. Such an understanding can provide profound insights into our humanity, leading to fundamentally new computing technologies, and transforming the diagnosis and treatment of brain disorders. The HBP Flagship Initiative (HBP) thus proposes a unique strategy that uses ICT to integrate neuroscience data from around the world, to develop a unified multilevel understanding of the brain and diseases, and ultimately to emulate its computational capabilities. The goal is to catalyze a global collaborative effort. During the HBP's first Specific Grant Agreement (SGA1), the HBP Core Project will outline the basis for building and operating a tightly integrated Research infrastructure, providing HBP researchers and the scientific Community with unique resources and capabilities.

European Network of Fourier-Transform Ion-Cyclotron-Resonance Mass Spectrometry Centers

EU_FT-ICR_MS proposal aims to establish a European network of FT-ICR (Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance) mass spectrometry (MS) centers in association with a manufacturer and a SME software company. Mass spectrometry (MS) has become the most ubiquitous analytical techniques in use today, providing more information on the composition and the structure of a substance from a smaller amount of sample than any other techniques. Unlike other analytical techniques, such as NMR, which mainly rely on a unique technology, MS is characterized by the existence of a large range of mass analyzers. FT-ICR MS is the most powerful MS technique. It offers up to100 fold higher mass resolving power and mass accuracy than any other MS technique. On the contrary to NMR community with which the FT-ICR MS shares several features, FT-ICR MS has never been involved in a European INFRA network and so will be a legitimate candidate to the Integrating Activities for Starting Communities call.

European Human Biomonitoring Initiative

The overarching goal of the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative is to generate knowledge to inform the safe management of chemicals and so protect human health. We will use human biomonitoring to understand human exposure to chemicals and resulting health impacts and will communicate with policy makers to ensure that our results are exploited in the design of new chemicals policies and the evaluation of existing measures.
Key objectives include:
# Harmonizing procedures for human biomonitoring across 26 countries, to provide policy makers with comparable data on human internal exposure to chemicals and mixtures of chemicals at EU level;
# Linking data on internal exposure to chemicals to aggregate external exposure and identifying exposure pathways and upstream sources. Information on exposure pathways is critical to the design of targeted policy measures to reduce exposure;
# Generating scientific evidence on the causal links between human exposure to chemicals and negative health outcomes;

SYSCID

A Systems medicine approach to chronic inflammatory disease

The SYSCID consortium aims to develop a systems medicine approach for disease prediction in CID. We will focus on three major CID indications with distinct characteristics, yet a large overlap of their molecular risk map: inflammatory bowel disease, systemic lupus erythematodes and rheumatoid arthritis. We have joined 15 partners from major cohorts and initiatives in Europe (e.g. IHEC, ICGC, TwinsUK and Meta-HIT) to investigate human data sets on three major levels of resolution: whole blood signatures, signatures from purified immune cell types (with a focus on CD14 and CD4/CD8) and selected single cell level analyses. Principle data layers will comprise SNP variome, methylome, transcriptome and gut microbiome. SYSCID employs a dedicated data management infrastructure, strong algorithmic development groups (including an SME for exploitation of innovative software tools for data deconvolution) and will validate results in independent retrospective and prospective clinical cohorts.

A Global Alliance for Zika Virus Control and Prevention

The Zika virus (ZIKV) infection is an iconic example of re-emerging arboviral diseases. Observed as a human disease as early as in the 1950ies, it was identified as a major public health issue only in 2015, when imported in Latin America, causing clusters of microcephaly and neurological manifestations. The causal relationship between ZIKV infection during pregnancy and microcephaly and otherbrain anomalies appears close to certain. In order to fight the consequences of ZIKV infection, the following major tasks need urgent resolution: (i) the assessment of the scale of the problem - absolute and relative risk of fetal damage in relation to time of infection during pregnancy, and postnatally; (ii) understanding the natural history of the infection at different scales - from cellular mechanisms to human infection and circulation of the virus in the environment.
These are essential prerequisites to the development of modes of prevention or treatment.

Hybrid Fixed Leading Edge

The project is adressing the topic JTI-CS2-2016-CFP03-LPA01-14 Automated injection RTM system process based on innovative sensor technologies in a low cost smart manufacturing tooling prototype and any tooling involved in the manufacture or the validation of the structure. The final objective of this topic is to produce the needed tooling to manufacture the HTP Leading edge structure (modified to include a HLFC system) using liquid resin injection processes, in particular RTM process to produce the mentioned part. The resulting structure shall comply with the actual regulation of the aerospace sector, in particular regarding geometrical tolerances and defects. Coexpair is the leader of this project, the other partners are Tecnalia, Pégard Productics and University of Liège. In order to produce the needed tooling to manufacture the HTP Leading edge structure, 5 elementary technology blocs are defined as objectives.

Bentonite mechanical evolution

The overall objective of the project is to develop and test the tools necessary for the assessment of the hydro-mechanical evolution of an installed bentonite barrier and its resulting performance. This will be achieved by cooperation between design and engineering, science and performance assessment. The evolution from an installed engineered system to a fully functioning barrier will be assessed. One of the challenges is to take into account initial heterogeneities introduced in the system by conception with a combination of block and pellets or due to the size of the bentonite component (several 100 m3). It will require a more detailed understanding of material properties, of the fundamental processes that lead to homogenisation, of the role of scale effects and improved capabilities for numerical modelling. The goal is to verify the performance of current designs for buffers, backfills, seals and plugs.

MEMO (2017)

Mechanics with Molecules

In this project, single molecule-machines will be constructed and tested on a surface and one at a time, controlling the rotation and the work delivered by a single molecule-motor directly at the atomic scale. The molecule motors and gears, designed and tested by MEMO, will be further adapted to applications requiring collective and synchronous motion.
The MEMO partners will design molecular motors and gears able to perform collective and synchronous motion. They will test the rotation of such molecule-gears step-by-step according to their chemical composition, the structure of their teeth, their rotational axle, and the supporting surface. MEMO will design molecule-motors adapted to transmit single molecule motion from the atomic scale to the mesoscale (and beyond).
In MEMO, low-temperature UHV experimental methods including scanning tunneling microscope and four independent scanning probe microscopes on the same surface will be used, as well as atomic force microscope in solution.

Coherent Optical Parallel Computing

COPAC is a transformative novel area in computing both because of the technology, coherent information transfer by ultrafast laser addressing of engineered quantum dots, QD, arrays and because of the specialized parallel processing of large amounts of information. We will make foundational experimental, theoretical and algorithmic innovations to demonstrate a new technological paradigm for ultrafast parallel multi-valued information processing. We aim to develop a ground-breaking nonlinear coherent spectroscopy combining optical addressing and spatially macroscopically resolved optical readout to achieve unprecedented levels of speed, density and complexity. Two key high-risk / high-reward pioneering elements are the quantum engineered coherent concatenation of units and the multidirectional optical detection. Experimental demonstrations on tailored multilayer QD arrays of increasing complexity, integration into a device and novel hardware and matched compilers will be delivered.

Nurturing Africa Digital Revolution for Agriculture

NADiRA aims to incorporate Copernicus, other Earth Observation products and in-situ IoT devices into mAgriTM, an existing value chain orchestration platform connecting, in smallholder contract farming, producers with banks, insurers, input providers and agro-industries to control risks and improve the productivity, security, and welfare of tens of thousands of African farmers.
By industrializing EO products , NADiRA reduces mAgriTM's operating costs, while increasing the timeliness,  granularity and reach of its following services: (1) Agricultural investment risk mapping, to reduce finance institutions cash-out and increase availability of input credit to smallholders, (2) More robust, affordable agricultural insurance contracts, to reduce persistent climate risk, (3) Improved smallholder tactical management of crop nutrient deficiencies and post-harvest losses to increase productivity, harvest quality and income.

DYNAmic seed networks for managing European diVERSITY

Conservation of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (PGRFA) is an arena populated by different and composite players. Acknowledging the diversity of the stakeholders involved in the conservation of wild and cultivated biodiversity, DYNAVERSITY will propose a dynamic management and governance aiming at enhancing interactions, complementarities and synergies. DYNAVERSITY will facilitate co-construction between actors (e.g. farmers, gardeners, natural parks, seed craftsmen, community seed banks, researchers, exsitu actors, consumers) and establish new forms of seed networking, socio-environmental knowledge and practices. By creating the Sharing Knowledge and Experience Platform (SKEP), representing stakeholders coming from research, ex situ networks and communities of practice, and taking into account the respect of the singularities of each of the actors, DYNAVERSITY will facilitate exchange and integration of scientific as well as practical knowledge on how to best manage diversity in agriculture.

The EOSC-hub project creates the integration and management system of the future European Open Science Cloud that delivers a catalogue of services, software and data from the EGI Federation, EUDAT CDI, INDIGO-DataCloud and major research e-infrastructures. This integration and management system (the Hub) builds on mature processes, policies and tools from the leading European federated e-Infrastructures to cover the whole life-cycle of services, from planning to delivery. The Hub aggregates services from local, regional and national e-Infrastructures in Europe, Africa, Asia, Canada and South America.
The Hub acts as a single contact point for researchers and innovators to discover, access, use and reuse a broad Spectrum of resources for advanced data-driven research. Through the virtual access mechanism, more scientific communities and users have access to services supporting their scientific discovery and collaboration across disciplinary and geographical boundaries.

ImmunAID

Immunome project consortium for AutoInflammatory Disorders

Systemic autoinflammatory diseases (SAID) encompass several rare disorders characterised by extensive clinical and biological inflammation. SAID are caused by the dysregulation of the innate immune system. Due to numerous and unspecific symptoms, tentative diagnosis often leads to failure/delay and inadequate treatments. ImmunAID will deliver a method for rapid and accurate diagnosis across all the spectrum of SAID, in order to improve clinical management of SAID patients. Thanks to parallel analyses run on samples from 620 patients with monogenic or undiagnosed SAID collected throughout Europe, Immunaid will generate a unique and comprehensive set of data, based on unbiased multiomics approaches (gene, transcript, protein, microbiome), and hypothesis-driven assays exploring inflammasome, inflammation resolution and immune networks. A centralised data management strategy will enable to conduct integrated analysesfor diagnostic biomarker identification.

VALITEST

Validation of diagnostic tests to support plant health

Regulated or non-regulated pests (bacteria, virus, fungi, nematodes, arthropods or weeds) are responsible of major crops' losses. Accurate and reliable detection and identification of pests are essential to avoid or reduce economical costs and trade disruptions and to support surveillance activities. In recent years, numerous tests based on new technologies have been developed to meet the different needs. However, most of them are validated on an intra-laboratory basis, through limited test performance studies (TPS) or ring trials, and there is a need to further harmonize practices. The project aims at producing validation data and will include two rounds of TPS. The first one will include combinations of pest/test/matrix, prioritized based on the expertise of the project's consortium. The second round will include other combinations based on the needs expressed by various stakeholders. Priorities for validation will then be better aligned to their needs and to the market.

This means, to identify, how genetic, molecular and cellular principles of organisation are being translated to cognition and behaviour, from bottom to top. Also, to decipher, the ways by which behaviour, disease and environment may influence and constrain the molecular, genetic or cellular levels, from top to bottom.
However, decoding the multi-scale enigmata of the human brain is a task of such complexity that even the sum of all the resources mobilised to date by all brain research initiatives pales in comparison.Even the best-funded single research initiative will not scale to the necessary levels, nor be able to incorporate all the excellent scientific research needed.
For this reason, the HBP is building an ICT-based European infrastructure to enable and accelerate neuroscientific, technological and medical research.

EURAXESS TOP IV

Open EURAXESS -To strengthen the effectiveness and optimize the services of all partners in an innovative and open EURAXESS network

The EURAXESS TOP IV consortium includes partners from 40 countries (34 beneficiaries and 7 Linked Third Parties), covering the whole EURAXESS network and maximizing the impact for the long-lasting benefit of the research community. The project has been divided into 8 work packages, apart from the WP devoted to Project management. WP2 (EURAXESS Career Development), WP3 (Social Integration Initiatives) and WP4 (Engagement with industry) aim to address strategic issues related to the widening of the services from mainly mobility-related to services also for non-mobile researchers. In particular, WP2 and WP3 aim to expand the set-up and operation of Career Development and Dual Career services within the network; on the other side, WP4 promotes intersectoral mobility of researchers by promoting entrepreneur careers through collaboration with innovation facilitators and launching industry-academia mentoring programmes for researchers.

Human Brain Project Framework Partnership Agreement

Understanding the human brain is one of the greatest scientific challenges of our time. Such an understanding can provide profound insights into our humanity, leading to fundamentally new computing technologies, and transforming the diagnosis and treatment of brain disorders. Modern ICT brings this prospect within reach. The HBP Flagship Initiative (HBP) thus proposes a unique strategy that uses ICT to integrate neuroscience data from around the world, to develop a unified multilevel understanding of the brain and to diseases, and ultimately to emulate its computational capabilities. The goal is to catalyse a global collaborative effort. A Core Project will build and operate a tightly integrated network of six ICT platforms, providing HBP researchers and the scientific Community with unique resources and capabilities: multi-level atlases and highfidelity reconstructions of the mouse and human brains, tools andworkflows for brain simulation, high performance computing infrastructure, interactive supercomputing...

MAGYC

MigrAtion Governance and asYlum Crises

MAGYC seeks to assess how migration governance has been influenced by the recent “refugee crises” and how crises at large shape policy responses on migration. The general objective of the project is to appraise policy responses in the light of the ‘crisis’ and assess their efficiency for the long-term governance of migration. This overall objective shall be fulfilled through the pursuit of different specific objectives:

  • Reflecting on policy gaps in migration governance, and analysing jointly the emergence and implementation of regulatory instruments (including national public policies, bottom-up local initiatives and regional and international frameworks)
  • Correlating this analysis with migration dynamics in order to develop indicators of migration governance, to better assess the effectiveness of the different policy instruments developed in reaction to the crisis.
  • Understanding the articulation between migration dynamics and policy responses.
  • Offering a dynamic analysis of policy-making, focusing on knowledge-policy discrepancies, cognitive gaps in policy making and points of contention.
  • Proposing possible avenues for the development of innovative migration governance strategies that break away from path dependency.

Female Reprotoxicity by EDCs: a human evidence-based Screening and Identification Approach

The FREIA consortium aims to close gaps in scientific knowledge on the mechanisms by which EDCs can affect female reproduction during specific life stages and will provide test methods to address this. The FREIA consortium has human tissue models that span the entire life cycle from fetal ovarian and adrenal tissues to child and mature ovarian follicles, that will be used identify human relevant biomarkers of EDC exposure.

CHILD-UP

Children Hybrid Integration: Learning Dialogue as a way of Upgrading Policies of Participation

CHILD-UP researches the social conditions of migrant children’s integration through social participation, taking in primary account gender differences, legal status and age groups, with the final aim to propose an innovative approach to understand and transform their social condition.

The first specific objective of the project is to provide an European overview, collection of data and evaluation concerning children’s conditions of living, protection and education. The second objective of the project is to provide support for migrant children’s exercise of agency in changing their own conditions of integration and constructing hybrid identities. This objective can be achieved through the promotion of a dialogic system of practices, in schools and in their relations with partners (social services, reception centres, education and mediation agencies) and families.

ENhancing stAkeholder participation in the GovernancE of radiological risks for improved radiation protection and informed decision-making

ENGAGE seeks to identify and address key difficulties and opportunities for stakeholder engagement in four fields of exposure to ionising radiation:

  • answer the questions why, when and how are stakeholders engaged in radiation protection issues;
  • develop novel approaches to analysing stakeholder interaction and engagement and, provide guidance for meeting challenges and opportunities identified in response to (a);
  • investigate the processes for enhancing radiation protection culture and their role in facilitating stakeholder engagement, and develop guidelines for building radiation protection culture;
  • provide recommendations and build a joint knowledge base for stakeholder engagement in radiation protection.
